Contextualization of My Curiosity for Health and Fitness

By: Lexi Cooperstein

Where it all began...
I have always been fascinated by health and fitness. I find it to be really interesting because health and fitness are very relevant in our daily lives. Growing up, my mom always stressed the importance of taking care of oneself and I think that is one of the biggest reasons why I am intrigued by this topic.

I began going to an esthetician about five years ago to receive skin treatments. Estheticians are beauty therapists, and although that sounds superficial, highly educated and skilled estheticians have a lot of knowledge of the science that goes into different treatments and creams and the health benefits of each ingredient. Our skin is our body’s largest organ and healthy skin comes from within. You cannot just buy a cream and expect to have good skin. However, since our skin is our largest organ, it still needs to be nourished like the rest of our body. Many treatments contain essential oils and antioxidants form many common different fruits and leaves. I’ve learned a lot from my esthetician about the science of the herbal medicine that goes into each treatment.

My esthetician is always telling me to use lavender oil to cure my issues. Did you know that lavender oil has antibacterial and healing properties? If you use it on any type of burn, bug bite, or blemish, it will increase the reproduction of your skin cells to help soothe it and make it heal faster. Lavender oil also aids stress, migraines and insomnia. It is nice to know that this essential oil can be a natural alternative for multiple man-made and synthetic treatments.

Fitness Influence
In high school, I was on the cross-country team and because of this, I learned a lot about how to be fit, and how the body works. I thought that cross country was just about running, but there are many other factors outside of just practicing that influence one’s performance. Eating healthily is really important for athletes and for people who exercise on a daily basis. If you have too much sugar in your diet, it can cause you to cramp up and therefore will hold you back from performing at your best.

Summing it up + a quick fact to get you started
Without one’s health, it makes it much more difficult to enjoy other important aspects of life. There are so many easy things that people can incorporate in their daily lives that can positively impact their health and well-being. Simple things, such as drinking more water every day helps detox your entire body and it makes you more awake and energized. Next time you feel tired, try drinking some water to wake up! The Institute of medicine suggests that men should have at least 13 cups of water a day and that women should have at least 9 cups of water a day. So drink up, you have nothing to lose.
